Phil's Sunday School series on marriage is taking a short break for today (Phil preaching in Roseville) and next week (all church retreat), so this week we got to hear from Stephen. The main passage we went through was Colossians 3:1-4, and the topic was The Foundation for Holy Living: Christ Centeredness. Stephen had two main points for Christ Centeredness. First of all, we're to have two mindsets: running after Christ-Centered pursuits and ruminating on Christ-Centered purposes. Secondly we're to have two motivations: in Christ, the old earthly you doesn't hold any power and the new real, you is yet to be fully revealed.
Since it seems like everything is coming in twos, there were two things that stuck out to me. (That's not really the reason, but there were two things that stuck out.) One of them is Stephen's use of the word "ruminating." What the heck is that? Anyway, he used that word because it fits his theme of using "R"s. At first, I thought it was a bit of the stretch, but that word does fit the point. To ruminate is to chew on something. He used an example of a cow. Cows constantly walk the streets of India. Anyway, if you look at cows, they are constantly chewing - chewing the cud. We are to be same way but with the things of God. We're to chew on, set our mind on, meditate on, and get lost in Christ's purposes.
One last thing that stuck out is from Philippians 3:20: "For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ." The point that I got out of this was that we should long for home. Our home isn't here. We're here just temporarily. Our true home is heaven, but yet sometimes we get too comfortable here. It's like going on a trip or a vacation. It's cool to be away from home for a while, but after a while you really miss home. You miss the little things - the comforts of home. And you know that you don't belong there, but you belong at home. The same goes here. We don't belong here; we're just sojourners - travellers passing by. (Speaking of travellers, a few of us watched The Forbidden Kingdom last night; I enjoyed the movie, but this post isn't about that.)
So, living for Christ - that's our main reason for being here. Wherever we're at and for however long that we're here, we're to live for Christ.
